The department was created in 1916 in response to the nationalist views of the freedom movement. It created a platform for the Bengal School of Art and revived the Oriental Styles of painting initiated by Abanindranath Tagore and Percy Brown. The Indian style of painting primarily uses water based techniques and lyrical line drawings, walking in the path of traditional Indian art. Contemporary images and expressions have been added through the last decades, elevating it far above just the mythological paintings practised as academic training for years. Professor Dhirendralal Bramha was a great master teacher in the department.
