Admission Procedure (BFA and MVA: Session June - July)

Issuance of Application Forms

Application forms are issued from the College Office from the date of publication of the result of the Higher Secondary (H.S.) Examination, West Bengal. Admission forms can be downloaded from this site too.

Documents required (for collecting forms): Original Admit Card of Madhyamik/equivalent examination and mark-sheet of H.S. or equivalent examination.The same documents are required at the time of submission of Forms Downloaded from this site.

Documents required (for submitting forms): Applications, duly filled in, on the prescribed proforma along with copies of necessary testimonials (Age, Qualification Certificate and SC/ST/OBC Certificate, if any) to be submitted.

Note:

• Application forms which are not properly filled in will not be accepted.
• No application form will be received by post and no admit card will be sent by post.

Issuance of Admit Card

Admit cards for the admission test will be issued by the office as per the announced schedule from 12 pm to 3 pm at the College Office.
 

Eligibility for Applying for BFA

Academic sessions at GCAC begin in June every year. A candidate seeking admission to GCAC must pass the Higher Secondary Examination (10+2) or equivalent examination from a recognized Board/Council, with 40% marks in Bengali and English. He/she should be 23 years or below on 1st July 2011 (the year of admission). Forms will not be issued to over-age candidates.

Admission Test Details for BFA

Admission Test Subjects:

• Drawing
• Aptitude Test
• Viva-Voce*

*If necessary, the candidates may have to sit for a language test too.

Note:

• In the application form itself, the applicant should clearly mention the choice of stream/subject for specialization that he/she wishes to pursue after successfully completing the one-year Foundation Course. Subject for Specialization once opted for cannot be changed.
• Admission of overseas applicants is subject to the approval of the University of Calcutta and the Govt. of West Bengal.

Admission Test Timings: Admission tests will be held on the notified dates in 2 sessions, between 11 am and 1 pm and between 2 pm and 4 pm. (Lunch Break is from 1 pm to 2 pm.)

Reporting time: 10:30 am

Selection Criteria: Selection for admission will be strictly on the basis of merit.

Reservation of Seats: Reservation of Seats for Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes/O.B.C. is as per rules by the Govt. of West Bengal.
 

Admission to the Master's of Visual Arts (MVA)

The minimum qualification for admission to the first year of the Two-Years Master's Degree Course in Visual Arts shall be B.F.A. Degree with 55% marks (aggregate) in the previously mentioned specialization or such a degree from any other university recognized as equivalent as per the rules framed by the University of Calcutta.

Role of the Admission Committee

• Change in the number of seats cannot be challenged, as it is at the discretion of the Admission Committee.
• The decision of the Admission Committee of the college regarding admission is final. No enquiry or correspondence will be entertained in this connection.

Eligibility for Examinations

Examinations: Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) (Professional Course)

There will be four University Examinations at the end of each session:

• BFA Part I - at the end of Foundation Course
• BFA Part II - at the end of First Year of Specialization
• BFA Part III - at the end of Second Year of Specialization
• BFA Part IV - at the end of Third Year of Specialization

Criteria for BFA Examinations

Attendance

• Students who have 75% attendance of the total classes in the session will be allowed to sit for the examination in Under-Graduate level as a regular candidate.
• Students having 60% attendance and above but less than 75% will have to apply for condonation to the Vice-Chancellor, University of Calcutta, after paying the condonation fee for Non-Collegiate candidates as per the regulations of the University of Calcutta.
• Students having attendance below 60% will be declared Dis-Collegiate and will not be allowed to sit for the examination in that session.

• Students failing twice to pass the foundation level will not be permitted to continue in the college.
• No break in studies will be appreciated in this regard.
• Also, at the Specialization level, students will get two chances to sit for examinations in each part without any break in studies.

Examinations: Master's of Visual Arts (MVA) (Professional Course)

Criteria for MVA Examinations

Attendance

• No student will be allowed to sit for the MVA examinations if he/she does not attend 65% of the routined classes (both theory and practical).
• Students having 50% attendance and above but less than 65% will have to apply for condonation to the Vice-Chancellor, University of Calcutta, after paying the condonation fee for Non-Collegiate candidates as per the regulations of the University of Calcutta.
• Students having attendance/percentage below 50% will be declared Dis-Collegiate students and will not be permitted to sit for the examination in that session.

Course Structure and Content

4 Year Integrated Course Leading to BFA Degree
The course offered here is a four year integrated course comprising one year in Foundation and three years in Specialization, leading to a BVA professional degree course, has been introduced from the session 2003-2004.

The One Year Foundation Course (Part I)
This is mainly an orientation course where the students are given a general training in different subjects related to specialized streams of visual art. The idea is to relate them to the art world both technically and intellectually. The syllabus, therefore, has been planned to nurture their interest and gradually train them to develop their creative faculty. At the degree level, the importance is more on application.

2 Year Course Leading to MVA Degree
The two years post graduate curriculum is offered which leads to MVA degree. At the post graduate level, students get a chance to experiment with and develop a visual language of their own.
